In this randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial, researchers from Universities of Bolzano and Bari, Italy, investigated Evonik’s novel probiotic preparation IN VIVO BIOTICS® gluten tolerance, a pro- and post-biotic blend of Lactobacilli, Bacilli and their cytoplasmic extracts. Their goal ? To assess the gluten-degrading activity of this blend during digestion.
Here’s what they found :
- Reduced residual gluten : volunteers who received the probiotics had significantly lower amounts of residual gluten in their feces, even when consuming increased gluten intakes of up to 10 grams per day. This suggests that the probiotics effectively break down gluten during digestion.
- Microbial regulation : the probiotics also positively influenced the intestinal microbial communities. Certain genera critical for maintaining gut health saw improved abundance.
- Persistent effects : quantitative PCR confirmed that the probiotics persisted throughout the intervention and even during the wash-out period.
- Immunomodulating metabolome : the fecal metabolome of probiotic-fed volunteers showed potential immunomodulating activity, particularly related to branched-chain amino acids and short-chain fatty acids.
This study offers hope for those affected by gluten-related conditions. It also aligns with preclinical studies showing that this blend is superior over conventional, enzyme-based gluten digestion aids.
